Last week Monday, the 28th of November, was a terrific night for music at the Troubadour. Russian Circles was headlining with deafheaven and Marriages for support. This was probably seeing Russian Circles for the 3rd or 4th time. I think I had seen deafheaven 5x now. Marriages is a new band featuring 3 members of Red Sparowes--this might've been their 1st gig playing. They were well received.

Polygraph Of The Mountain Battles

There were 5 bands, which starred Eddie's band, It's Casual (Hardcore/Skatecore), Aeges (Post Hardcore), GFP featuring Pro Skater Tony Alva (Punk), Auto-Modown (Stoner Rock), and ...Of The Horizon (Psychedelic Doom). The following zip file is ...Of The Horizon's set in which they unveiled 2 new songs!!! NOTE: upon D/L, please update the song titled "Light" to "Light to Light" and "Williamette" to "Willamette." Young Animals As Widows

Boy, I haven't touched this blog in quite awhile. Although I've learned a way to batch process a WAV, finding the time to work on my boots is a pain...

Young Widows put on a great show at the Satellite. They were nice and loud, great set all around. My buddy's band, Polygraph, opened the evening and that will be uploaded shortly. Followed by My Disco from Austrailia--loud band, although they have ultra repetitive riffs, they were pretty good.

A 5 band bill will often stretch out the sets to the point that the headliner will have to sacrifice some of their time to allow the other acts to have enough stage time. Well, case in point, Animals As Leaders played a ~50min set. I was surprised to see some of the shorter segue type songs played like "Point to Point" or "Modern Meat." Enjoy the new song tho, it's pretty rad.

The first time I saw North was @ the Alterknit Lounge when they played with Long Live the Smoking Gun. North's set was amazing and when I saw them late last year of 2010, they still are amazing. Post Rock Meets Screamo I guess would be my best guess for what genre they are in.

Ok, Rosetta is almost ready, sorry to those folks who've been asking me about both their sets from last year. They will see the light of day!!! Mike Armine just needs to email me the song titles from the Vacation Vinyl in-store and The Blvd show.

Now for the linkage, Deafheaven hails from San Francisco, CA. A great band that I found out got signed by Deathwish within 4 months of its inception. I have to confirm this to see if my friend was right in telling me this. They're an incredible band. The easiest way for me to describe them is Japan's Envy. They played a short set @ Vacation Vinyl with the Funeral Pyre. If you meet them in person, they are all stand up dudes!

Silver Snakes is a Burbank, CA based band that features an ole friend Daniel of Bleeding Kansas/Horse The Band fame. This was a great night of catching up with him. The last time I recall seeing Dan was @ a house party where Bleeding Kansas played and I hung out with some of the Horse The Band guys that evening. Well anyways, he's playing drums in this outfit and this band is awesome. Fugazi-esque for sure.

January 29th, 2011 @ Vacation Vinyl, a panel led by author Steven Blush of the book, "American Hardcore" 2nd edition. A 100 pages newly added to this edition. However, this discussion brought to the table; Brant Bjork, Chuck Dukowski, Mario Lalli, Greg Anderson, and Pete Stahl. It was an hour long talk about the influence of American Hardcore on Stoner Rock. A very interesting panel! This file will also stream from the American Hardcore website as well.

What a night, a great set that differed in the opening songs with several staple songs included. This set was a tad bit louder than the night before, but that had no effect on the limiter on the Ed. I also just noticed I made a tab bit of a mistake--the 1st night I compressed and didn't resample to 44kHz but instead kept it at 48kHz. I will re-rip from the 24bit/48kHz files to V0/44kHz of the 1st night tomorrow when I get a chance.

It was a 60+ mile trek for me to Alex's Bar in Long Beach. The bill was 3 bands: Stab City, ...Of The Horizon, and The Shrine. Unfortunately, the management had to cut the show short due to noise issues w/the neighbors. The show had to be over by before 11. All three bands scrambled to play about a little over 15 min each. 10/30/10 was the mark of Pelican's 10th year Anniversary as a band. Such an amazing show with Nails and Goatsnake opening. Pelican played for an hour and a half! What a great night it was, saw a bunch of friends at the show and rocked it well.

Tuesday night was a rainy night, but that didn't stop any fan of the four bands that played at Chain Reaction on the 19th. Here is the 1st upload of Envy from this evening. The PA wasn't as good as the Troubadour's, but suffice to say it was a great show. Lots of energy that particular evening. It was too bad that some fans left before Envy played when they were there primarily for Touche Amore and La Dispute. But Japan's Envy imported their live sound for the 1st SoCal date in 4 years (Envy played Fuck Yeah Fest in 2006 which I attended and recorded).

The Yoleus hail from Minnesota, an instrumental math rock band. The first album, "NightmareCircleVision," was amazing and had a ton of hooks. Their newest release, "Splain," is a tad bit of a new direction for this powertrio. There are songs with a bit of saxophone and keyboards. Jeremy of The Yoleus told me in an email that this will be the last release in this style of music since it's... hmm, not as popular as it once was. Most bands are going the post-rock route. I'm not an expert on this and correct me if I'm wrong though, it's sad to say that The Yoleus will steer in a new direction possibly? Oh yeah, Jeremy, I hope you don't mind me blogging this, but the new album is great and I wish that math rock was more prevalent in these "Post" times. I haven't picked out a favorite on "Splain" yet, but I'll post a part two for this review.

SURPRISE!!!

What a night! All of Focus, Traced in Air and 3 more songs--Cynic was great. However the mix was somewhat poor in the beginning as Timon's (spelling?) guitar was very low. It progressively got better as the set went on. Intronaut and Dysrhythmia were the openers and they don't disappoint!!! This is just the Cynic set. Enjoy!

Sabor Lounge was an interesting place. Small dive bar near downtown LA and not the safest neighborhood either. 4 bands played on June 8th and it started with Kill Kill Kill, ...Of The Horizon, Destroy Judas, and Aranya. Unfortunately my ride arrived right when the last band, Aranya went on. I wanted to stay but going home was more important. ...Of the Horizon played an awesome set and played a brand new song, called "Witch At the Helm." Brilliantly blistering as Iron Mike blasted our ears out with his Green Cab monstrosity. Steve and Bill always are an awesome team of being the rhythm section for this band. Last weekend was a blast seeing FAR. They always put on a great show and never disappoint. Jonah is an outstanding frontman and knows how to read the crowd and gives and receives the energy from the audience. This was an awesome set and it was a mixture of new and old. "Dear Enemy" off the new record is by far (pun intended) my favorite song. The title track of their new album, "At Night We Live" was a song written for Chi Cheng and his family and is a hopeful song. For the spirit of Chi, here's the set in its entirety:

A quadrilogy of metal occurred on the night of May 7th at the Fox Theatre. In order of appearance, Valient Thorr, Baroness, Between the Buried and Me, and Mastodon. Holy moly, what an amazing show. This was an incredible night seeing all these bands on the same stage. However supporting act, Between the Buried and Me brought on a brutal set of 4 songs from their repertoire. Seems like a short set? Nah, all 4 songs clock in over 8 min at least--two of which are over 10min. These metalcore proggers don't disappoint. NOTE: at the beginning of the set there were technical difficulties that possibly shortened the set. Without a further adieu:

This was a nice set by the Sparowes. They played mostly new stuff from their latest release, "The Fear Is Excruciating, But Therein Lies The Answer." These guys were amazing! My virgin ears were ringing. I went to this show not having heard Caspian and went cause of peer pressure from 5tuart and 5pencer. Boy this night was great, opening for Caspian were Beware Of Safety and Arms & Sleepers. All bands were fantastic! Caspian put on a solid set and Phil said that this show is to make up for the past 3 years that they haven't been here to play a show. Loved every note. Glad these guys had the opportunity to open for Red Sparowes and Fang Island in the midwest. Here is their set:

Fang Motif

The last 2 nights of dredg were incredible and both differed a bit. 1st night sold out the day of the show and there was people getting rough during the entire set even during the slow songs. My buddy and I couldn't figure that out but at least the 2nd night was relaxed and no roughness around the edges. Both nights the sets were similar but mixed up for good measure. Oh yeah, these shows and small tour was a celebration for the release of Leitmotif (11th year anniversary), which featured said album in the set. Pretty sweet and Gus the opera singer who sang on the album also sang both nights. At the show for the merch they were selling pre-orders for the Leitmotif vinyl. Last week Saturday was the Red Sparowes show with Fang Island opening. There was another opener called Jesus Makes the Shotgun Sound and just were not good at all. The mix was not so great for Fang Island--it's difficult to mix 3 guitars, a bass, and 2 keyboards. They played a fantastic set and blew away the audience! Wow, what an awesome night last night was. Philm played first and absolutely slayed!!! Dave Lombardo will just not stop playing fast. Pancho and Jerry did a terrific job of doing what they do best (Bass & Guitar/Vox)!!! This is my 3rd time seeing Philm and boy they set the bar high!

Next on was It's Casual. They put on a helluva show. Eddie always brings the rock as well as Tom. Full of energy these two shredded thru their repertoire. I love "the New Los Angeles!!!"

Fireball Ministry was awesome. Stoner rock at its grooviest. The rhythm guitarist reminded me of my buddy, Renee, who I played in a band with. Perhaps her doppelganger? This set was great for a closer for me since I couldn't stick around for Hillybilly Herald.

In due time I will have these sets for D/L. I'm getting backed up for 2010 already!!!

Wow, I'm half awake as I type this cause I'm recovering from Record Store Day @ Amoeba today. RSD was a mess. Some ppl were helpful, others were just plain out of line to get what they want. Pretty ridiculous. Glad I got there @ 845am. The line was terribly long for the Smashing Pumpkins in store, however the single from their forthcoming album is so BAD!!!

Well, last night's Autolux show was GREAT! A slew of new songs were perfromed. I was leaning against the wall on the right hand side of the monitors. It was a very sold out shows. It ran a bit late with Franz Nicolay starting a little after 1030pm. This was an uber late night show, which is the reason why I'm nodding off as i type this)... zzzz. Autolux hit the stage a little before midnite which I thought was ridiculous. Almost missed my ride home, but the driver for Access is cool w/me. I didn't have an opportunity to get a setlist, but what was really annoying is that Carla's name was called several times during the set. oh well. Ok, my eyes are partially closed now. I'm sending this to my buddy for him to eq it for me on his rig! Hope my friend has time to do it soon!

Wow, what an incredible night! Saw Behold! The Monolith, Hallowed Engine, Winterthrall, Exhausted Prayer, and It's Casual on a FREE Sunday night @ the Dragonfly. Was pleasantly surprised by Wintherthrall which I never heard of until that night, pretty darned good. Behold! The Monolith was great, they started the night off and I had seen them before w/Behold The Arctopus, Intronaut, National Sunday Law and Mouth Of The Architect--that was another incredible bill from August 26th, 2008. Behold! The Monolith played heavy duty stoner rock! Also, nice guys! Exhausted Prayer was amazing as well, dang the drummer is fast! Super fast double kick drum! Last but not lease, Eddie Solis tore it up w/his duo, It's Casual! Great set too!

I haven't spliced and diced any shows from this particular date, I need help w/song titles before I upload them. Yesterday I did splice the ...Of The Horizon set from 3/28/10, just waiting on 1 new song title from Steve.

Hey all, I recorded last night's set but won't be able to work on it till Monday, tomorrow. I've got a metal show to cover and then if it rains tomorrow and I'm homeward bound, I'll splice and dice the show for you folks.

About last night's set: it was good, they opened with "Be Leaving" and it's become my favorite song. This set was similar to last Monday's set except they played one song that according to Josh hasn't been played in awhile (like a year I think he said). Everyone in the band went nuts during all the rocking part of the songs and were well refrained for the quieter moments. It was an awesome set. Lots of energy was felt from the band to the audience.

Bless her soul, Dot Hacker played 2 nights ago. Finally getting a chance to write about their set. It was good to see Josh in form once again since it had been February 2009 opening for Jane's Addiction and the El Cid show. Almost a good year since then. Josh was way more animated as he played guitar or keyboards (mini rhodes?). It was a beautiful set. I enjoyed it even tho I had just started a bout with a cold.

I did record the set, but there was 1 snafu w/recording that particular set. I didn't realize that I had the "Low Cut" on so it deprived the recording of the natural bass that should accompany my boots. That was why I had such a low recording, BUT I could boost the bass by equalizing it. We shall see. I shall work on it tonight. Here's the setlist:

Good morning folks! Here's a boot update from me!

Last night I updated the site w/The Joy CIrcuit from the Viper Room in 2004 and Brant Bjork @ Vacation Vinyl from 3/18/09. A few people were asking for The Joy Circuit so I went ahead and re-transferred it to the Edirol and it's now ready for consumption. This was one of the few performances in which I recorded on Minidisc. I do have another show of theirs from Spaceland, so be on the look out for that.

Brant Bjork was the drummer of Kyuss and played with Fu Manchu among other bands. This was a FREE show @ Vacation Vinyl. Awesome set too. Wish I had gone to the Echo show the night before. Hi folks,

I recorded the Brant Bjork set last night at Vacational Vinyl. What an awesome set, I'm not all that familiar with his solo stuff but definitely the Kyuss music. Need to get me solo albums and Fu Manchu. Played for a little over a half an hour which was great because it was FREE! Need to get song titles probably from other fans and maybe wait till the album drops in a week and a half. I'll try to splice it tonight and wonder if I should upload w/o the song titles?

Last week Sunday, was a smorgasborg of metal. About 5 or 6 bands played a FREE show @ the Dragonfly. Pretty sweet! The highlighted bands that I recorded were It's Casual and Philm. Both bands breathed new life into me. Damn good sets by both! I had to leave during the 2nd song of Jucifer so I did not have the chance to record them. They were loud!!!!! Philm was fantastic, Dave Lombardo was nailing the skins pretty hard! The rest of the dudes in the band are super cool! I'll try to get around to getting them up online this weekend. Not exactly sure when, but stay tuned here!

Rainbow & The Serpent

It was hot in that little room last night, Open Hand played a nice set and seared through 10 songs at the Rainbow Bar and Grill. Hardly any circulation in that place, but the energy was there nonetheless. The highlights of the set were the new songs, BUT they were the same ones that they played at Spaceland on 1/4 of this year. I was hoping more newer songs, but that was all in their repertoire for this evening.

I didn't get a chance to ask, but Alex Organ is not in the Hand. The drummer who did play though had a small electronic pads to activate samples from the album--that was a bonus for me. They had the intro to the album for "Herons," "Cool's intro from the movie Parenthood, and the BIg Trouble in Little China sample in "Hard Night."

More personnel changes: 1 of the Angels was dropped, the short Asian girl was not there as well.

I'm pretty excited for this album to drop and will pre-order the album next week Monday on the 15th. The album will be released on April 20th and remember folks, Open Hand is not releasing the album, but Anodyne Records is. Hence, the record label is responsible for releasing this. The band is just responsible for the music, not the politics behind the album.

I'll try to splice the show tonight and upload till then. Take care all!

A Builder of Light: Report

2 nights ago was the 2nd night of Shrinebuilder and A Storm of Light. The opener was a band called Night Horse, which featured members of Ancestors and Bluebird. The night started late but I was able to get home in a timely manner. Earlier in the day they had an event at the Echo but discovered during soundcheck that the PA was not working. So the Echo crew had to scramble to rent PA speakers or else they would've canceled the show. The sound was not great of course and the levels weren't conducive to recording. This time there weren't any technical difficulties for A Storm of Light, thankfully. They played an awesome set. Shrinebuilder was great too, they covered each others songs from each of their respective bands, pretty cool. The night went on and I got out about 1240am, just in time for my ride to pick me up. It was a good nite indeed. This nite was packed which was good!

On a side note, I have bad news about tomorrow night, Sunday's Philm show @ the Dragonfly--I won't be able to make it due to health reasons. It's something I have to take seriously and will have to bow out this Sunday. I will cover hopefully Philm one of these days, but not tomorrow or next Friday when they play with Jucifer. I'll be okay. It will take some time, but it'll be worth it.

A Storm Of Shrines:Report

Hey folks, so last night the opening band, "Green and Wood," had some technical difficulties with a full stack of Orange amps. The girl's guitar could not be heard through out the set. Sux. Then A Storm of Light came on and the guitarist/singer had an amp malfunction of some sort resulting in a huge buzzing sound. So their set was cut REALLY short--I mean 2 long songs and that was it, but not long enough past 20 minutes. Hopefully tonight will make up for that. I noticed that the place wasn't packed and according to a friend it wasn't a good idea to have 2 CA dates back to back. So the fans were spread thin and it wasn't sold out. It was a good crowd, but there was still energy in the air from Shrinebuilder. Man, the bass was loud and prominent, moreso than the guitars! I think it will be evident in the recording so stay tuned folks! Tonight is round 2, should be fun, I'm trying to remember who's the 1st band which was in the recent Spaceland email blast. This Friday and Saturday are dedicated to splicing and dicing the recent shows, so they should be up by Sunday or Monday night. I need to buy the CD or crunch down on the LP w/the D/L card. Not sure, but I might be going to Coachella now, we shall see...

Last night, man, last night, the show @ Dipiazza's was friggin AWESOME! Of The Horizon imparted the night with their crashing dirge upon a select few audience. NOTE: it was a benefit show for a friend of the family of the drummer who has Lou Gehrig's disease. I heard they raised a good amount of money for the family, so I was happy to hear that. BUT, man, last night the 2 new songs they unsheathed were fantastic!!! The sweet melodies that they played all were memorable! Especially on my Edirol! They played for almost an hour. I was extremely pleased and the trek from my town to the LBC was definitely worth it!!! Expect the mp3s in the coming week! I'm anxious to hear it myself...

Well, at this time they added a keyboardist to the line up. I thought the sound in there was not so good at the Old Towne Pub to get a good feel for the trio. The keyboards were often not as loud enough in some parts of this set if I recall correctly. It was a good set tho and I always enjoy what Ken is noodling.

Oh yeah, some guy was heckling Houston and I actually had some words while shooting photos from the stage. Well, well, well, last night was a rager when Open Hand hit stage. Wish there were a photographer there to get a business card from, alas, there was just the plain old point and shoot folks. Oh well, at least the show came out well on the Ed. Soundguy definitely had some trouble mixing the so many mics on stage... 1 for Ryan, 2 for Justin, 3 for Keyboardist duder, and THREE more mics for the Angels!!! Oh yeah, did I tell ya it was packt? There were shit ton of folks for the Hand!!! Which was nice!

OHHHHHHH, the real joy for a person who's seen the Hand for the past few years, they started the set with a different song!!! PHEW! Change it up man! Thank goodness!!! They opened with "Werden (tentatively called?)," one of the heavier songs on the New Album instead of their usual "Hard Night" intro and song from their "You and Me" album. They played a couple more new numbers from "Honey" which were, "Cool" and "Herons." I was so looking forward to hear "Herons" live even though Matt Talbott sings on the album version. Goodness gracious, that song rockt live!!!

Alex Organ (for those not in the know is Jason Gerken's half brother) pounded the drums last night. He was so damn unforgiving! Relentless! It runs in the family I guess. The rest of the band was tight! The Angels add a new dimension to the band, making it funner? Shit, that's not even a word, but funner is what I'm going to run with and say about this new lineup!!!

Last night's Mew set was nothing but amazing. Quite different than the previous 2 shows I saw in September. No "Comforting Sounds" as a closer, which is fine with me, but they played "Silas the Magic Car" and "Snow Brigade." Interestingly enough, they opened with "Hawaii," which is my favorite song off of the latest album.

The crowd was into it. The projector was spot on with even more spectacular visuals. One of the funnier visuals I still recall is a demonic looking chihuahua barking at the camera (minus the actual barking noises, thankfully). Pretty funny stuff, but cool nonetheless.

A special treat last evening was a solo piano performance by Jonas playing New Terrain/Nervous. That was nice.

Please note: there were yappers on both side of me talking continuously throughout the set and I was with a friend. I couldn't really escape cause my friend wouldn't have had a clue. Perhaps I should have warned her beforehand. I will do that next time. Anyways, this was a very big pain in the ass to "eq," so I just normalized each track individually. That's why "New Terrain/Nervous" is so loud (that was normalized to -2db, while the remaining set was normalized to 0db).

Just finished the We Be The Echo & Totally Serious sets from November 6th. Waiting on song titles for the Young Widows set opening for Russian Circles.

Also, finished watching the 1st episode of Flash Forward, I'm sucked in now...

Ok, here's an update. I did the Pelican set this morning and uploaded this early this afternoon to find out that I have the songs mixed up. Pelican's Ephemeral EP does not have the correct titles for the first 2 songs--they were switched! SOOOO, the first song of the set is:

Then, the 4th song is:

Ephemeral

Well, I'm not going to re-upload the zip file cause I already uploaded it. So your job after you've downloaded it to your computer. It would be recommended that
'you' switch the song titles correctly on whatever you use for your mp3s. Capiche?

Last night I uploaded the set for Black Cobra. This is a great and phenomenal set by this awesome 2 pc. They mostly played off of their 1st and recent album. NOTE: the previous set from 2008 will need to be redone so that I can "eq" it better. Those files from 2008 were just normalized to 0db. OK, here it is:

I sent an email to their myspace to get some help on song titles from that setlist. Altho I do have everything they've released, it's just that I need the "new" edirol (when it arrives) to rip the 12" EP they released. The mp3s are ready, they just need names!!!

By request, I uploaded an older show but these are also normalized to 0db and not eq'd. This is the set from Spaceland of Nueva Vulcano from 2008 with the Life and Times (7/24/08):

Hey folks, not much of an update. Hope you all had a good Turkey Day last weekend. I did with the family. Eating turkey soup which my mom made soon after thanksgiving.

Anyways, I'll try to work on some older shows for download soon! Hang in there folks!
